The old aquarium water has nitrates and some nitrites and is Ph balanced. There is also some diluted salts in it.

I don’t know what filters or air pumps I need to maintain a freshwater aquarium. I want to do as little maintenance as possible. Biological, mechanical, chemical filters????? Could you give me a specific example of which ones (with brand names) to get that work together well in keeping the water clean and clear?? I bought some anacharis (live) plants for my 10 gallon tank and now there are dozens of baby snails in my aquarium. They are really too small right now to fish out with a net. What’s the best way to get rid of them without hurting the fish I have in the aquarium that doesn’t require my actually TOUCHING the snails? And how should I dispose of them?

I have a 55 gallon freshwater tank that has been established for approximately 2 months. I recently added very finely crushed coral for my substrate and am planning on housing the tank with a few different African Cichlids.

1) Can I add plants to my tank using what I have?

2) Is it time consuming? (More than a couple of hours a week)

3) What is CO2 Fertilization? I’ve read to do this in some different literature I’ve found. Does any know if it is costly? (More than $20 a month.)
