Can I put rocks from Lake Huron into my aquarium?
freshbliss asked:
I am just setting up my 3 gallon aquarium, and I found some great reddish brown gravel at the pet store……Last year I found some great smooth stones on the short of Lake Huron that would look really good color-wise with the gravel, if I boil them, will it be okay to put a few in?

Absolutely ok, they just have to be disinfected, which boiling will do

You probably can, you should boil them to sterilize them in case they have anything on them that could hurt your tank. Some rocks are basic and can change the pH of your tank. You can test this by scratching the surface with another rock and pouring vinegar on them. If it bubbles your rocks will change the pH and you probably shouldn’t put them in.

Beware of any bristtle wormssince they tend to cling on to rocks and even inside them, their not cool to look at in aquariums

Sure. Just boil them first to rid the germs.
