  1. start out with freshwater, they are tons of fun and a bit easier. then later if you really want to, either after your freshwater one is over - which will be a long time– or if you feel like you have room for another, start a saltwater!

  2. What size tank are you making? If you are thinking of making a salt water tank, I wouldn’t use less than a 10 gallon tank and I, personally, would put two chocolate chip starfish in it. They are amazing to watch, especially at feeding time!!! And they’re not expensive, like salt water fish, and are pretty hardy. Google them and research what they eat, but some things are shrimp, scallops, etc. You just put a piece on a flat rock and they’ll climb on it and eat. They are very entertaining! If you’re getting a bigger tank and setting up salt water, you can still add a starfish or two.

  3. Depending on the size of the tank you want to start out with is part of it.

Freshwater can be fun and interesting with the right mix. Cichlids to Tetra…there are many colorful fish. Bettas to Goldfish….colorful and personable.

With Saltwater you have you Damsels and Tangs…and many other different type of saltwater fish…they are not more difficult to keep, just a bit more expensive to purchase and prepare for and a little more time to care for. Saltwater can be more colorful in selection and very interesting to wash.

I would suggest starting out with a community freshwater tank and eventually going to a saltwater tank after a while and after you have been successful in keeping a community tank alive and well continious.

As far as a fresh water fish dealer, there are plenty out there on the net…just have to search and research their stock. Start off with you local pet stores and see what they get in or can order for you…this way you could avoid the high shipping charges and pet stores usually order in mass.

    Best of Luck!
