How often can I add conditioning salt to my freshwater aquarium?
stashley88 asked:
I have a 37 gallon, cycled, freshwater aquarium. Im still in the process of adding new fish to the tank slowly. The salt has directions on how much to use, but not how often. I want to make sure they don’t get too stressed. Any feedback is appreciated.

salt should only be used to bolster immune systems when the fish are sick, it should NOT be used all the time with freshwater fish. overuse of salt with true freshwater fish will cause kidney failure.
what fish do you have stocked? some fish such as tetras, corys and pleco catfish are entirely intolerant of salt.

You really don’t need to add that stuff. It is used as a general “tonic” to help fish get rid of diseases or parasites.

attaining isotonisity (equal levels of dissovled solids outside of the fish as well as inside) is one of the most basic thing you can do to improve the health of your fish.
beefing up the levels of salt is what aids in disease prevention.
but it’s not that the increase in salt helps the fish it’s that it kills bacteria, fungi, protists etc.
i would add a measured amount, 37 gallons should be like 6-7 tablespoonfuls, into a cup and then dissolve it with tank water. and slowly add that you the filter to evenly distibute into the tank.
adding it is going to make little wavy light distortions if these last more than a few second you’re pouring too fast.
as for how often to add it, you can
A) do a whole bunch of math to determin how much salt you take out with your water changes and work out how much more to put in
-or-
B) do what i do and just don’t add any more for a couple of months, then start with a whole dose.
it’s not like they NEED it or anything.

Once you have the right amount of salt added you will only need to add more when you do a water change. And then it is just enough to treat the new water minus any water added for evaportation. So if you had one tablespoon for every 5 gals to begin with and do a 10 gal water change you will add two more tablespoons of salt. To make sure that you don’t over salt the tank add in water for evaportation first then do your water change taking out 10 gal and adding 10 gal.
Hope this helps.
