Does anyone know why the top dorsal fin on my freshwater fish is missing cunks out of the top?

freshwater fish
Joseph W asked:

Some of the fish have chunks missing out of their side and back fins as well. I have already treated them for rot fin. I have one red tailed shark, four rainbow sharks, three bala sharks, indesent shark, a yellow and black striped fish, red parrot fish who has nothing missing but he never chases the other fish, I also have four algae eaters, three plectos, three african clawed frogs, two puffers, one peacock ell, and snails. Its a 70 gallon tank.

  1. It may be acts of agression, even though you don’t see it.
As for the iridescent shark, just letting you know, as he grows he will need a bigger tank.
They can grow up to 4 feet believe it or not.

  2. Your tank is extremely overstocked, which is stressful for your fish and probably making them more likely to attack each other, though you also have several species that will attack anyway. I would recommend you take a bunch of them back to the fish store. Most good local fish stores will give you a store credit for them and the rest of the tank will have a chance to settle down. I can’t say exactly how overstocked you are because I don’t know what kind of algae eaters, puffers, and plecos you have but the iridescent shark alone is too large for your tank. He will eventually need a 200 gallon tank if he doesn’t already. Also, in a tank with that many aggressive fish, you need to have plenty of hiding places. You will see your fish less, but they will be better able to protect themselves.
