go to the fish store and get fish that have the same aggression types. i suggest getting community fish first if this is your first tank - guorami and guppy are popular - they’re easy to care for. fish stores mark their fish according to aggression type - community fish, semi-aggressive fish, highly aggressive fish. so, obviously, you don’t want an aggressive fish with community fish - the community ones will get eaten. I have all cichlids in my tank - they’re all semi-aggressive types.

Platys can get along with just about anything, but if you have 1 male and female Platys or swordtail, you should expect to have a bunch of live fry. I really like my Blue Ram Cichlid, he has a ton of personality and is not to hard to please (just good water conditions). Also, different kinds of barbs (cherry, tiger, gold) are good because they are very active. Tiger Barbs are not exactly peaceful though. I guess I can only say fish that I have that get along. 1 Blue Ram, 4 Platys, 3 Gold barbs, 2 Dwarf Honey Gouramis. I have kept all these fish in one tank with no trouble. Just make sure that you have a number of caves and plants just in case you happen to get an unusually agressive fish or two.

There are 100s of fish species, and so thousands of combinations, many that work, many that dont.
You need to decide what type of tank you are going to set up.
Community with small peacefull fish.
Semi-agressive with larger fish.
Agressive physco killer.
Then you can pick fish to suit.
There is some overlap, like a large pleco can go in any of the tanks, but thats only because its peacefull, but armour plated. But that gives you some idea.
Also check the adult size of the fish. Some are sold small, are peacefull and pretty, but grow to a foot long. Bala sharks are good example, great fish, but you need a 6ft tank to keep them for life.
Also be aware the tank needs to cycle, to build up the bacteria in the filter system. Start out with just a few hardy fish for the first couple of weeks, or do a fishless cycle before you add any fish.
