What are some pretty freshwater fish?
Julia asked:
I got a tank and I got a boy guppy, I’m thinking about getting the female guppy too. So what are some other pretty freshwater fish that aren’t to big.

Tetras, dwarf guaramis, mollies, platies…there are a lot to choose from. Just make sure that they are compatible with each other.

Discus must be about the prettiest. “Fancy” guppies have beautiful tails.

neon tetras, flame tetras…depends on the size of the tank… if it’s bigger some platies…

Angel fish get a little big, but are the prettiest fresh water fish. They also have a large life. They move slowly so don’t need as much air as fast moving fish. Pairs are beautiful when they synchronize their swimming.

I had Neon Tetras, Albino Coreys, and African frogs (to make the tank more pretty) in my tank. If you got 1 male guppy, you need to get 1 more male and 1 female to breed them. 2 female guppies per 1 male. (picky) If you choose to breed guppies, i recomend getting a breeding net from a local pet shop or Wal-Mart. (to ensure the safety of the babies)
Neon Tetras, Black Tetras, Albino Coreys, Plecaustomus (to clean and often times protect the baby guppies) and Pladdies

There are so many! The problem you will have is that guppies are such delicate fish. It is hard to find a tank mate that does not hurt guppies. Remember first of all that you need at least 2 females for every male guppy. The rule of thumb is 2-5 females per male. As for other species, you should be safe with cardinal tetras. They have a bit more red on them than neon tetras and are really pretty. You can try congo tetras. They are larger, but the colors are really pretty, and they are extremely docile. Blue or gold rams are absolutely gorgeous, and are generally docile, but I would not try them with guppies unless I had a quite large tank.
Avoid bettas. They will kill your guppies. I have had that happen. Also stay far away from any gouramis, tiger barbs, or cichlids. Angel fish are quite aggressive and will make a meal of any smaller fish.

Neon tetras are very pretty fish and are great in communities. One problem is that they tend to nip on the tails of guppies because they are long, flowy, and colorful. That is one thing you must be wary of when getting little fish. I wouldn’t put bettas in with them either. Yes, they are very pretty, but guppies tails imitate that of a bettas, making it possible that they fight. Dwarf gouramis are nice to have, but they might not be the size you are looking for. Dont forget, gouramis can tend to be aggressive if their space requirements are not met. I also think that zebra danios or any other type of danio really go well with guppies. These are all good community fish for your guppies. Good luck!
Please email me or post more details if you have other questions.

YOU REALLY SHOULD CHECK OUT THEY SELL GLOW IN THE DARK ZEBRA DANIOS WHICH WOULD BE FINE WITH GUPPIES.
