What’s the secret to keeping aquarium plants healthy in a freshwater aquarium?

freshwater aquarium
Dog asked:

Do they need special food or can they just thrive off of the fish waste?

Also, do I need to keep them in the plastic frames/pots that some of them come in, or should I just take them out and put them into the gravel?

  1. Lighting with the proper light spectrum, good water circulation and keep algae under control.

  2. Fish stores do sell those kinds of lights so all you need to do is ask. Look at what kind of light your fish tank top takes and you can tell the clerk at the pet store and they can help you find a growing light for your Fish tank.

  3. water them every day

  4. Lookup DIY CO2 injectors.

As far as removing plants from their baskets, it really depends on the quality of your substrate material and the type of plant. Removing them shouldn’t really be a problem. Just shove the roots below the substrate.

  5. It depends on the plant. Aquarium plants just like all plants have different requirements. Your first concern is what light level the plant requires. The Aquatic Gardeners Association is a great resource for live plants. Check out their web site and this should help you a lot. Without knowing what type of plants(s) you want to keep and what type of lighting you have I can’t give you much advice.

For just about any aquarium you can have Java Fern and Java Moss. Some other relatively easy plants are Water Sprite, Hygrophilia and the Vals. Anubias are easy, slow growing plants though they need an established aquarium and can’t handle quick changes. Stability is the key to them.

  6. 1. If you have fish, make sure they aren’t the kind that eat or dig up plants.

    2. Yes, plants have special requirements just like fish do. Special nutrients for a particular plant would be best. Also, special lighting is important for part of each day.

    3. Taking them out of the pots is your personal preference.
