Filleting is the least messy way to clean fish, plus it leaves the bones out of the final piece of meat. Check with Cabela’s or Bass Pro Shops web sites for instructional videos. Get a decent quality knife which will hold an edge or you will be disappointed. Rapala makes about the lowest cost of a knife which will hold a decent edge. Don’t go cheaper.
I cut the head almost off, leave just a small strap of flesh intact underneath, slice it up the underside and then pull the head off and the guts will follow. That works for trout or bass, also just filleting them will work too.
