twigs and branches are not good for your fish tank. you need a log of about 3 inches diameter at least to start with. remove all the bark. and boil it for at least 3 hours. all wood will eventually rot in your tank. unless of course you decide to encase it in polyurethane or something similar but then it will be really buoyant. and most likely you will need to attach the wood you use to a piece of slate or similarly thin mineral. i would use a brass or stainless steel screw for that

Usually, driftwood is used as an aquarium decoration. Anything that might leech out of the wood already has. It’s usually sold at aquarium stores for too much money. There are types that will sink when waterlogged. If you find your own, definitely boil it.
Certain types of wood and plants can be used to create water conditions better for certain fish. Check out some books about the type(s) of fish you keep or search for info online. Might get some ideas on how to decorate and create a healthier envirionment at the same time.

don’t put branches or twigs in your aquarium… i have tried it twice and the water turned very foul….the acid of the water would rise and the fish in that tank will eventually die…
