I have a 55 Gallon Tank that I bought used. It had been used for freshwater fish?
Terry R asked:
It has sat empty for a year and now I want to clean it up and use it for freshwater fish. It looks clean with no residue but I know it will still need to be cleaned. What is the best and easiest method? It’s a huge tank for me to handle so that is a consideration. Is there some sort of spray on/ wipe off solution I can purchase at the pet store to use? All answers will be appreciated.

just use vinegar and water, and make sure it’s completely rinsed out. DO NOT USE WINDEX….my mother did that years ago to clean our fish tank, and she killed every last fish.

Just wipe it out with a wet cloth, and use as hot water as you can stand. There’s really no need to use anything else. You should keep in mind that there is a danger in using any kind of cleaning solution. Any leftover residue could upset the water balance and/or harm the fish.

DONT USE SOAP. my sister tryed that once. Whenever we get new fish we just put HOT water [tap or boiled] and then put baking soda into it. thats all we have ever done. and Our fish have always been alright.

I use regular kitchen salt with just enough water to scrub, used tanks. Crystals have a great scrubbing action, and also dissolves with hot water.

I would give it a good rinse, maybe afew times, but without to much chemical cleaning solution, then rinse with clean cold water. Fill tank and then add treatments you can get from petshops to make safe.
