Nitrate levels in my freshwater aquarium are high what do I do?

Momof1 asked:

The nitrate levels in my freshwater aquarium are high. I’m not sure what I should do. I did a 20 % water change Saturday and then again yesterday. The levels are still high. The tank has been set up for over a month and I let the tank run for a week before adding fish. When I did the water changes I used 1/2 distilled water and 1/2 de chlorinated conditioned tap water. I also added stress zyme biological filtration booster in the most recent water change. It is a 10 gallon tank and I have 3 mollies and 2 ghost shrimp. I have been told Mollies are not right for a 10 gal aquarium. But when I purchased them, at Pet Smart, I was told they would do just fine in a 10 gallon aquarium. I probably shouldn’t have listened to the salesperson but I’m new to this hobby and didn’t know any better. Please help!!! What should I do now? I don’t know if I can return the fish since I’ve had them for over a month. I cannot afford to buy a larger aquarium right now.
I do not have a gravel vacuume. I am feeding them daily, about a pinch. I skipped last night. I might have been over feeding them a little. The filter is a Aqua- Tech 5-15 power filter, I changed the filter cartridge yesterday.
When I first set up the tank I put salt in the water 2 Tablespoons. I have not been adding it to the water changes.

I would prefer smaller fish so there can be more rather than a few big ones. Does anyone know what fish would stand out the most?

Can lucky bamboo survive fully submerged in a freshwater aquarium?

I’ve heard a lot on both sides of the argument here. Some say the bamboo must be poking out of the water, others say it will do great fully submerged. I am looking to clear this up. Thanks.

Need tips for setting up a 75 gal. or more freshwater aquarium?

dansaremm asked:

I have a 29 gal. freshwater tank, and we’re looking to add a second, much larger tank. We LOVE our aquarium! It’s been set up for about 3 years now, and it’s been pretty successful (until my spotted catfish got bored one day and ate all the neons).

I would like to keep the 29 gal. as a semi-aggressive tank with catfish, gouramis, sharks, etc. and use the bigger tank for community fish, like mollies, neons and tetras. Have any of you had a community freshwater tank this big with these species? Can I use a few seashells from the ocean in a freshwater tank of that size? Is it harder to maintain than a 29 gal? And it’s going to be on the second level of the home (1st level is a finished basement). Will my floorboards hold that much weight?

I appreciate any tips and advice.

I caught a small brown salamander in a lake, I placed it in my fishtank with goldfish. Will it be fine in there? Will it eat the fish flakes food?

Is a saltwater aquarium a lot harder to maintain than a freshwater?

freshwater aquarium
Cody asked:

I have a freshwater aquarium (10 gallon), and it’s nice and all, but I’d like to try an aquarium with some really beautiful fish. A lot of the colorful ones are saltwater. I take care of my tank, and it’s not a big hassle. I change the water, add some chemicals, feed them, make sure everything is ok every day, and that’s about it. Is a saltwater tank significantly harder to maintain? And besides for what I just mentioned I do to take care of my freshwater tank, what additional things do I need to do to support a healthy saltwater tank?

Or would you recommend just buying a bigger tank and purchasing aggressive fish? Those seem to be really nice too. I was thinking cichlids and some others, maybe an eel too. Can peaceful fish such as my australian rainbow be put in with fish like those? Thanks, any ideas/help/comments would be appreciated.
In answer to how much I want to spend, not too much, but I don’t have a set limit. I want to make sure I get good equipment. The size I’m planning for is 55 gal. Is that a good size that will allow me some diverse fish, or is that too small? Also, as someone mentioned the lighting, is that for the coral etc., or fish? In my current freshwater tank I rarely have the lights on.
