the best fish for 35 gallons is 1 crown tailed betta cuz there small ya can also put about 2 cory cats in ther`ll do great together
crown tailed betta tips: The Crown Tail Betta has a striking, elaborate tail that differentiates it from other Bettas. The Crown Tail has a teardrop shape to its tail while the Twin Tail is split, almost giving the suggestion of having two tails. The Crown Tail Betta is a type of “Siamese” Fighting Fish. These fish have been bred over the years to enhance the fins and remarkable variety of colors of the males, as well as making them increasingly combative. Therefore, only one male should be kept in a tank; however, smaller, shorter-finned females may be housed together with caution. In addition, a male and a female should only be housed together temporarily for breeding purposes. Females can be as colorful as the males, although, they rarely have the long finnage that is seen with the males.
An ideal environment for the Betta is an aquarium that holds a steady temperature and does not contain tank mates that may nip at their long fins. Do not house more than one male in the same aquarium, as they will fight.
Once laid by the female, the eggs are tended by the male in a bubble nest. Fry appear in about 24 hours and must be fed very small food initially, such as crushed or powdered flakes and newly hatched brine shrimp. Fry will also take finely chopped hard-boiled egg yolk.
A carnivore, the Crown Tail Betta will eat all types of live food as well as freeze-dried flakes and frozen foods.
and adolfoi cory cat tips:The Adolfoi Cory Cat comes from the tributaries of the Rio Negro and Rio Uaupes in South America and is a peaceful bottom dwelling scavenger. The Adolfoi is mostly pale in color and has one black stripe covering the back and another across the eyes.
The Adolfoi Cory Cat requires a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places that provide relief from the light. A smooth sand or gravel substrate is needed because of the easily damaged barbels. They enjoy being in numbers, so a small school of six or more is ideal for these cats.
Breeding the Adolfoi Cory Cat is accomplished by providing a number of the same species in the aquarium and allowing them to pair off. Success in breeding the Adolfoi has been attained with a low water level and a dH lower than 6. Feed the fry a variety of mashed dried foods as well as baby brine shrimp.
The Adolfoi Cory Cat is omnivorous and will require a well balanced diet including dried, flake, frozen, and live foods. Feed a quality flake and pellet food as well as frozen brine and live worms.

the first thing to keep in mind it the basic ratio of 1 inch of fish per gallon .. so keep their adult sizes in mine.. also some fish thrive better in little sholes of 5 to 7. also add some live plants this will inprove the environment of the fish tank .
in a 35 gal i have kept;
5 glow light tetra
7-9 neon tetra (or Cardinal tetra)
7-9 white cloud (often sold as a feeder but quite genital and colorful)
3 or 5 Black Neon Tetra
2-3 panda corydora ( aka:cory-cat)
you could increase the numders of each by 1 or 2 .. also to this colection you could add a few fancy tailed guppies..
this makes a nice comunity tank that will provied good color as well .
another collection of fish to put together would be
3 to 5 tiger barb
2 to 4 Dwarf Gourami (gentlaist of the Gourami)
2 to 3 silver dollar ( can get good sized my have to trade them in when they get to big for you tank)
2-3 albino corydora
1 male beta ( of choice)
though there is not quite as many in this collection these fish are a larger with out being monstrous ..
hope these help

Personally, I’d get a variety of African cichlids. Build up a large rock bottom sloping upward in back to about 1/3 up the tank, being sure to have several caves. Then put about 10-12 Africans. Make sure you have good filtration and aeration. Africans are one cichlid it’s good to seem to overstock, as they are very aggressive, and this spreads out the pecking order.
Or for smaller fish, go with tetras and rasboras, with a male betta and 4-6 cory cats. Try the leopard or Julii cats.
