I just bought a 40 gallon long tank.what are some good ideas for freshwater fish?

freshwater fish
SquirrelPanic asked:

I just bought the tank and still needs to be set up and cycled so a long way off from stocking…but I wanted to use the time to think of what fish I would like to eventually add.
I have a 20 gallon tank with Neon Tetras, Corydoras, and a guppy so don’t really want those in my second tank…want something different.
I am thinking I might want to set the new tank up as a semi-aggressive tank…I tend to like fish with a lot of color….any ideas for a freshwater tank?

  1. I like to use Zatarains Cajun Batter, then just pan fry in about 1/2 inch of olive oil.

  2. how about soem black ghost kbife fish, maybe some puffer fish, any fish is intersting if you just take the time to look at it & appreciate it.

  3. I like the good old fashion goldfish. I think they are so cute and funny. And they are pretty easy to take care of and good for first time fish owners… But whatever floats your boat I would say.

  4. I have a 45 gallon tank with two oscars (they seem to be ‘mated’ since their ‘behavior’ is more ‘romantic’ than ‘protecting each other’) and ten ’silver dollar tetras’ … but if you want ‘lots of color’ I’d say you should get a ‘variety’ of ‘fancy’ goldfish … fantails, bubble eyes, etc … in different ‘colors’ … get a few black ones, a few orange ones, and several with black, orange, and white ‘mixed’ … and they even have some ‘yellow’ ones that are really pretty, too.

  5. Some ideas of fish that i think would be good would be

    Red tail shark-semi aggressive
    Sword tail- semi aggressive
    Bleeding heart Tetra_ semi aggressive
    Barbs_semi aggressive
fire mouth cichlid- semi aggressive only keep with others the same size
    rainbow shark-semi aggressive

these are just some i have put 2 links with some fish you might find to your liking hope you find what you want and good luck with all your fish!

  6. It looks like you’ve done your homework and looked into this a lot. Good job. Too many people set up a fish tank and expect to have it stocked the very next day. I’m glad you are taking the time to let your tank cycle properly.

To give your new tank a “jump start” take some of the plants/ornaments, gravel, cycled water or filter media from the 20 gallon to help grow the colonies of beneficial bacteria in your new aquarium.

If you are looking for fishes with color, but would like to stick with some of the hardier and easier species, you may want to consider african or malawi cichlids. Bright yellows, blues, and oranges make them a popular choice. Understand though, that some of these species can get aggresive and territorial and also get very large provided they have room to grow. Other than that, tetra’s, platies, mollies and other livebearers are also very popular, come in a wide variety of colors and are easy to keep.

If you feel up to it, you also might consider taking it up a notch with some more delicate fishes such as discus, angelfish, or even freshwater stingrays. Discus and angels are also members of the cichlid family, but are more docile, laid-back and significantly less aggressive. They require more soft/acidic, and better water conditions. You will also notice at the petshops they have a much higher price tag. They are well worth it though! There are many, many colors and sizes of discus and angels ranging from the size of a silver dollar, to the size of a dinner plate with beautiful vibrant colors as well.

Stingrays I don’t suggest as much, as they may be illegal to keep in your area, are very unforgiving of poor water conditions, and require live food 24/7. Sandy substrate is a must and they will grow out of your 40 gallon tank very quickly. Even the teacup rays can get larger than 12 inches in diameter provided they are well fed within a couple months.

Whatever you choose, I wish you the best of luck. Fishkeeping is by far the most enjoyable and rewarding hobby in the world!

  7. Maybe a small arowana, archer fish, Gobies, cichlids, or bichers

  8. cichlids or sharks because they like swimming back and forth but if sharks bala only or red tailed shark only and don’t add them one at a time add them all at once otherwise the first one will kill the others and only have the same type of sharks together

  9. How about some mollies. Mollies come in a wide range of colours so you can make you tank look cool. Angelfish are always cool too. I love to watch angellfish grow up. They get so big!

  10. There are a lot of different kinds of Gourami and they are pretty. I have mine in with a Rainbow shark. Which would also be a nice idea. Good Luck with your new tank.
I put a couple links below about these to kinds of fish i mention.

  11. Try cichlids they are easy to keep come in 1000’s of colors and are just all around good fish.
and they are semi aggressive to very aggressive depending on what type you get . I think you would enjoy them very much.

  12. Try a Shark Tank here are a list of sharks that’s are good for your tank at the bottom of the page of the site listed
