Freshwater aquarium habitants other than fish?

freshwater aquarium
bry1105 asked:

What else can I put in my 46 gallon bowfront freshwater aquarium other than fish. (To add a little variety). I know of snails, crabs, shrimp, and crawfish. Can anyone explain the advantages & disadvantages of some of these and how to care for them? Thanks!

  1. Crawfish is often predatory, not recommended. Snails are excellent as they eat unwanted algae, crabs are fun, but usually need place to climb out of water, shrimp (ghost shrimp) are nice, but usually don’t survive and get eaten fast. Now, you haven’t mentioned frogs!!! African Dwarf Frogs are fun and exciting, they live completely underwater so you don’t need land. Also, get some real plants in there (like Java fern and such) it will look totally awesome!!!

  2. I just recently got a shrimp and it rocks. It is really cool to look at and when it swims around is really neat. You can’t have aggressive fish because they will mess with the shrimp, but I don’t so I got one. It just recently shed it’s shell which was kind of cool. It’s neat to see them clean the bottom of the tank and eat left over food. It’s awesome - I love mine…

I think the frogs are creepy (especially the albino ones) and I know snails multiply like crazy….

  3. there also many different types of Pleco’s. I have three tanks and five different plecostumus. Some examples are Rubbernose, Clown, Bristlenose, Albino, Chocolate, Albino Chocolate. they are bottom feeders, and can hang in aggressive and docile tanks. watch having too many in one tank, once they get a little bigger they compete for ground space. if needed they have sinking algae discs… And i agree about the crawfish, depending on if you have a docile tank, most of those fish will be food. One new addition that i have is a puffer (leopard). he eats shrimp.

  4. Whats wrong with fish!?
