if it doesn’t undergo chemical changes in the water (ex: an iron nail rusting) and if it doesn’t disintegrate in the water like sometvhing made out of clay, and some plastic items have toxic chemicals on them if htye have a harsh smell

If it is marked for aquarium use, most things not made for aquarium use will mess with the ph or kh or will have toxic chemicals that will seep into the water and kill your fish.
There are plenty of fake ornaments and houses and things made for aquarium use that will be safe for your tank!

If it does not do any chemical changes like rusting, if it is toxic, or if it is sharp.
(don’t use pennies or bottle caps)
Be sure to wash it of with hot water before putting it in your aquarium.

You can use pretty much anything, but first soak it in a bucket of hot water for 24 hours and then test the ammonia, PH, nitrites and stuff. If the water quality is unchanged, you can stick it in your tank. Make sure you scrub it though.
